Cardioid and Enhanced Cardioid Microphones
The Earthworks Z30X and Z30XL microphones maintain most of the "being there" quality of our omnis. If your desire is a directional microphone with full, open, detailed sound, this is it! Their impulse response is unusually fast and smooth for a directional mic; their frequency response on axis is flat out to 30kHz on the high end and their bass response is flat down to 30Hz at about 15cm. The Z30X and Z30XL provide a natural and uncolored representation of the sound as it arrives at the front of the microphone.We call the Z30XL an "enhanced cardioid" because while the front half of it's pick up pattern is a very open cardioid the back side is a very good and cohesive hypercardioid. While sound quality across the entire front half is very uniform, the off axis rejection is very thorough and uncolored.
The Z30X has a more traditional cardioid pick up pattern althought the front half is wider and much less colored than most directional mics. Please see the data graph page for details.
For recording applications the value of these mic's sound quality and directionality is obvious. The Z30X and Z30XL have a natural, uncolored sound and clean separation. They are also great microphones for hi-end sound reinforcement as there are no peaks to encourage feedback and the rear rejection is deep and wide. Singers absolutely love to use these mics. They are both particularly useful for broadcast and production voice applications where their lifelike clarity and detail enhance communication through realism.
